What counts as an SME?

A Small or Medium Enterprise is defined as an organisation with fewer than 250 directly employed staff (not contractors or freelancers). If you meet this threshold, you qualify for the 10% co-funding rate.

Important: Individuals are never charged for any part of a Skills Bootcamp. Employer contributions are paid directly to the training provider — not deducted from the employee.

How to get involved

There are two main routes — upskilling your current team, or recruiting newly trained candidates.

1
Find a training provider
Browse the 1,043+ courses available across England using the explorer above or the National Careers Service.
2
Agree on skills needs
Work with the provider to shape the bootcamp around your specific skills gaps. Providers must engage employers in course design and learner eligibility criteria.
3
Learners enrol and train
Courses run up to 16 weeks, online, in-person or blended. Employees can train alongside their current jobs — no need to stop work.
4
Pay your contribution (upskilling only)
Pay your co-funding share (10% for SMEs, 30% for large employers) directly to the provider. Recruiting external graduates costs nothing.
5
Interview graduates for your vacancies
If you recruited a bootcamp graduate, you commit to offering them an interview — but there is no obligation to hire. For existing staff you've upskilled, the training itself is the benefit; any further development or pay progression is entirely at your discretion.

What employers gain

Skills Bootcamps aren't just subsidised training — they're a talent pipeline tool backed by evidence.

💰
Significant cost savings
SMEs access training at just 10% of cost. Even large employers get 70% government-funded.
🎯
Shape the curriculum
Providers must involve employers in design. Your skills gaps directly influence what candidates learn.
👥
Increase diversity
Bootcamps are designed to reach underrepresented groups — helping you build a more diverse pipeline.
Fast-track to interview
All graduates are guaranteed a job interview. Motivated, recently trained candidates — ready to start.
📈
Retain & develop staff
Upskilling existing employees boosts engagement and capability. How you recognise or apply new skills within your business is entirely up to you.
🌱
Green & future skills
Courses cover green skills, digital transformation and net-zero roles — keeping your business competitive.

Common questions

Answers to what employers most often ask.

Do I have to pay anything to recruit a bootcamp graduate?
No — recruiting someone who has completed a Skills Bootcamp is completely free for employers. Government funds 100% of the training. You simply commit to offering a guaranteed job interview.
How is my company size determined for co-funding?
SME status is based on having fewer than 250 directly employed staff (not contractors or freelancers). Under 250 = 10% contribution. 250 or more = 30% contribution.
Can I influence what the bootcamp covers?
Yes — employer engagement is a core programme requirement. Providers must work with employers to understand skills needs and can adjust content and eligibility criteria accordingly.
Can employees train while still working for me?
Yes. Bootcamps are designed to be flexible — many are online or blended, so employees can continue working alongside training. Maximum course length is 16 weeks.
Who do I pay — the employee or the training provider?
Employer contributions are paid directly to the training provider. Individuals are never charged for any element of a Skills Bootcamp.
Is there a limit on how many employees I can put through?
No fixed cap per employer. However, individual learners can only undertake one Skills Bootcamp per funding year (1 April – 31 March). Talk to your chosen provider about volume arrangements.
